Well if you don't already know by now, Barack Obama is the first black US President in history. Surprise to many I must say. With his oratorical prowess, many attribute his victory at the polls due to his strong ability to communicate and link the hearts of the people with his ideas.
Is it really a surprise then that probably the most racist country in the world has finally elected a black president? Well not so. 40 or so years ago, when Martin Luther King Jr's 'Let Freedom Reign' speech was delivered, many would have said of civil rights and racial equality being put in the right direction. Well racial equality was destined for the American land.
According to a BBC report in 2010, 70% of Americans over the age of 65 are white. And well, over 55% of Americans today under 5 are not white. This represents a huge shift in American demographics. (Which I guess kinda explains the sudden influx of crappy black musicians in the 21st century.) Music aside, this is an important note. Because the America we know in 30 years time will be different from the America we knew in the 90s.
I guess things are not that lopsided for the moment. For most Americans living in poverty (or extreme poverty) are not whites. This leaves power and influence still squarely settled on the shoulders of the white man.
Who knows what this will bring to this new world. Only time will tell.
In this time of economic uncertainty and enormous deficeits in the airline industry... I present to you, the award winning idea from RyanAir : Paying for the use of the aircraft's lavatories!
Is this just plain stupidity or what. RyanAir has already contracted Boeing to retrofit its lavatories to a 'pay-to-use' style. The original idea was to have a coin operated toilet door where the user would have to pay £1 to use the toilet. RyanAir's cheif executive conceded that this original idea was not feasible as most of RyanAir's flyers use the euro as well. On top of that, Boeing couldn't come up with a coin operated toilet door. So they are settling for credit cards. Swipe to poo, is the idea. Amazing stuff man.
RyanAir is a low-cost airline and the world's largest carrier in terms of international passengers. It is also Europe's fastest expanding and most aggressive airline. Its other money-spinning ideas on the drawing board include charging for reading of the safety card, charging for the use of oxygen masks in case of depressurization (mad; swipe and die due to lack of time), and paying for bikini clad crew.

John McCain lost his bid for presidency. And for an old man like him, his doesn't have any time to campagin anymore.
All who saw McCain's speech at Pheonix, Arizona would have been really encouraged. In his speech to thank his supporters and to concede defeat, he urged his supporters to rally behind their new president. He congratulated and praise Obama for his tencity and perseverance in mantaining his campagin. Admist the boos of the crowds, he continued to urge them that America has spoken and that they should all look forward to a brighter future. It was a great speech. He was a great loser. In his speech, he mentions that he already has the honour of serving his country for half and century, and "that is enough by itself". "The failure is mine, not yours," was what he told his supporters. He recognised the African-American community and mentioned he knows its a proud moment for them...
That wraps up John McCain's bid for presidency which started in earnest in 1998 or 1999. A true patriot to his country, I will never forget some of his words in that stirring speech. America has spoken. God bless America.
Lucky me, I got today to observe America as the votes come in. With the new media internet and useful television channels like Channel News Asia, I can see the votes coming in almost like a diety.
I checked out a few youtube videos from Americans who give their own two cents on what they think of this election. Some videos useful and serious while most others were light hearted son of a bitch kinda comedy. It almost touches me when I see veterans who lost their legs and etc to support McCain. These veterans say American must understand that America made the commitment to defending world liberty. John F. Kennedy made that commitment and Americans have stuck by it since. But now that they created such a mess in Iraq, and its still their responsibility to clean things up: the reason why I do not support Obama's pull out policy. Apparently, the soldiers and veterans supports John McCain because they can relate to his fighting spirit and his tenacity. It almost angers me to see black rappers endorsing Obama in music videos and etc. Come on you punks, you just sit in Hollywood and make a video and you know nothing about the American Dream. In these times of crisis, America must show its character in "paying any price, to defend the survival of democracy in the world". Give the troops their leader.
Americans are taking to the polls in record numbers. A prove that the race issue plays a big part. America is still largely a white nation. White voters will vote to keep Obama out, black voters will vote to keep McCain out. We are going to see a revolution. Now, this is democracy.

China's Shenzhou 7 just brought 3 chinese 'taikonauts' into space and allowed China's first space walk in its thousands of years of history. This piece of news didn't exactly shock the world the way China's kinetic weapon did 2 years back. However, this incident made me speculate a couple of things in the space eploration arena. One thing that made me quite impressed with was how China could conduct this operation with the lack of media clout in the world. While the world greived at the wallstreet crashes and Singapore roared to the sounds of Fernando Alonso kicking everyone's ass in the Singapore Grand Prix, China has opted to play the, as of now, quiet game of space exploration.
One small step in space exploration, one giant leap for chinese projection of influence. China has thus far never failed to impress me with its suddeness and stubborness of its operation. The testing of their anti satellite kinetic weapon for one was a bold show of defiance to American imperialism in space. So the Chinese showed the Americans that they couldn't guide GPS bombs over China, what next? To the moon and back I'll say. This subprime mortgage crisis is threatening to push the United States into unparallel economic recession or perhaps, even a depression. The crisis, coupled with the ever increasing fuel prices have literally put a stranglehold on not just the American economy, but their livelihood as well.
Statistics show that America, is the most 'debt-ful' country in the world. Indeed, I believe the subprime mortgage crisis is nothing more but another credit crunch issue hitting back at the Americans after years, decades even, of negligance and ignorance.
This credit problem is going to hit the rest of the world as well if we continue living the way we are in Singapore. It was commonly believed that Americans become in debt the moment they step into college and their debts run on even in their graves. Its almost unimaginable. The sad truth of my perspective is, I believe Singapore is walking towards that direction. With increase in taxes, a never before seen inflation in the SGD and the increase in 'necessary' commodoties. I see us walking towards a more liberal social system of money, where, if we are not careful, might bring us unparallel destruction to our economy.
There is a bit of good news though. Oil dropped below $100 this week. Its still high as hell comparing with the last century, but its a cause of celebration. No doubt, it would be no time before things get out of hand again.
Sadly for the Americans, their lives revolve around oil. American urban communities are built around the idea that every adult drives. From the suburbs to the interstates, its impossible to get around without a car; unless of course, you fly. America has never been very public transport friendly. So kudos to those suburbanites who struggle to drive 10km to work everyday due to the cost of feeding their thirsty car engines.
Lets not even put peak oil into the picture, we still are, no doubt, in an impeccable shit position.

This week, a group of scientists come together under a mountain at the French-Swiss border. The ground holds the Large Hadron Collider or LHC. It is a massive particle accelerator that aims to collide opposing beams of a special proton. This machine accelerates the protons in a long tube driven by magnets. It is believed that when activated and put into operation, the collider will create or produce the elusive Higgs Boson particle or god particle. This is the only standard model particle not observed before. The observation of this Higgs Boson would allow scientist to fill in the gaps in the existing standard model of physics. The project cost is around S$13 Billion. This LHC is also said to be able to dive into the secrets of dark matter.
Dark matter is believed to be the holding webs of the universe and galaxies. It exist only in space. The theory is that the dark matter has mass the gravitate the entire universe in a specific position and not just drift off.

The two breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia broke away from Georgian control as early as the early 1990s. This renewed conflict in a desolated location in the world provides some interesting food for thought for observers.

The Georgians probably carried out the offensive with American support. Since Georgia had a contingent of 1000 troops fighting the backwash war in Iraq, Mikheil Saakashvili (Georgian President) probably thought his big brother would come in to save his ass in case of Russian intervention. The Americans miscaluculated as the Russians punched through the border to 'mantain' peace. The Russian steamrolled the opposing forces and provided the world to a rude awakening of Russia's post Cold War military might.
In a televised address a few days ago, President George W. Bush condemn Russia's act of an invasion of a 'sovreign nation' and invading a 'democracy'. I thought Bush's well timed speech was amazing, something we could all learn from. After all, it was he who went half way around the world to Iraq to beat the shit out of Sovereign Iraq and slap Saddam Hussien to his hole in the ground. I'm very sure Bush is in a very good position to condemn these attacks.
Just a few days back, in what I would call a fuel to fire affair, German chancellor Angela Merkel went to Georgia and promised Mikheil Saakashvili that Georgia would join NATO. There is only 2 things I find wrong in Mrs Chancellor's actions. Firstly, Georgia is in goddamn central asia, its called the NORTH ATLANTIC treaty organisation for a reason. And secondly, I'm SURE Georgia joining NATO would solve the problem. I do believe that Georgia's close ties with the west was one of the reasons for Russian intevention. Probably the Russians reminding the region that their livelihood still depends on them and not Mr Eagle holding the talon and olive branch.
Whether or not Russian intevention is justifiable, I cannot say, but what I can say is that, America is in no position to judge the Russian actions. This will not be a new cold war, but this is a signal of a new era of Russia's emergence as a big player in European affairs.

Before the day ended, Russia had entered the 2008 South Ossetia War.
Georgia is an Eastern European country, close to the Black Sea and Russia. Within the nation, there is a distinct ethnic group called the Ossetians, different from the Georgian ethnic group. Ossetia is a region sandwiched between Russia and Georgia, which contains most of these Ossetians. Some of them settled in North Ossetia, which is part of Russia. South Ossetia was under the Georgian government until 1992, where they had a war and broke away. Since then there have been many armed clashes between South Ossetia and Georgia. South Ossetia is not recognized as a country by the UN; they're officially Georgian separatists.
South Ossetia has rejected offers to return to Georgia, despite being promised a large degree of autonomy.
On August 1, fighting began to get intense between Ossetian paras and Georgian troops. The Georgians began to shell civilian settlements. Evacuations of many civilians to Russia were made in response. This was a sound move, as in a matter of days Georgian forces pushed into the South Ossetian capital city, Tskhinvali, causing hundreds of civilian deaths. The Georgians reiterated their offer to re-assimilate into Georgia as the devastation of Tskhinvali continued.
What does this have to do with Russia?
Apparently, many South Ossetians have been given Russian passports and citizenship, such that more than half of the residents in South Ossetia are either holding Russian passports or are Russian citizens. To "protect Russian citizens", the Russian army moved into South Ossetia on August 8 and by nightfall had retaken Tskhinvali from the Georgians. The Russians are adamant that Georgian forces return to the positions they held before the war began. Georgia has so far, sent back conflicting messages about where its forces are and has not proposed any ceasefire.
Abkhazia, another Georgian breakaway country (also officially unrecognized), just sent 1000 men on South Ossetia's side, today.
