I flirted with the idea of posting right after the conclusion of the general elections but I figured it was 3am and the smart thing to do was sleep and not babble aimlessly or going down to the car to honk 4 times in a beeep-beeep bipbip fashion. Smart move there. Then of course the onslaught of school work, procrastination and laziness arrived right on cue and now I'm here.
The aftermath of the elections have been bitter-sweet. We lost a honest gentleman who worked from a small office in a void-deck in Potong Pasir, but more importantly, gained a retard and 5 new opposition members in parliament(YES!).
Even more important than having more blue shirted MPs in parliament was the apparent change in the political landscape. Operations Spectrum and Coldstore are now a thing of the past and the people are more comfortable with expressing their views. The way it appears now, there are way too many voices to silence, and too many slanders to bankrupt and the ruling party have to, and for some part, trying to, live with this.
However unlike their poorer and "less capable" counterparts the ruling party still regards the "new media" as some murky unknown terrain filled with flamers and hate
:-) This is for the most part true, to some degree. Little debate occurs, and this is not only a problem on the web level as it is on a governmental level. However their frankly weird attempts to continue to police their outlets of "feedback" is frankly well...weird. But as the state media agrees, the resentment must have came from somewhere. Social and economical issues which have been glaringly obvious over the past few years are hot topics, which is new. The surprising gradual liberalization of state media could be a factor to this. Trying to climb the press-freedom list?
The main reason why I dislike the ruling party is because of their overzealous defence of their policies. Everything has a reason, and that reason must be good. "Do what is right, not what is popular" says the Social studies textbook. Your interests are well thought out in our very capable minds. Its not to the extent to being disgusting but their rhetoric is getting old and out of touch. Furthermore, many MPs even fail to explain their policies with the needed "political correctness" it sometimes almost appears as an argument against rather than for. The internet says, "fail"
What is worse are their young and exceedingly elitist supporters. The epitome of the problem of the ruling party. "We are all unappreciative spoilt kids who know nothing about the sacrifices of past". (1 of them eternal) We fail to see what the government have done for us. "We are only carrying hammers because its 'cool'". "We all probably have tattos or hangout at HDBs, opposing because we lack money for cigarettes". "All of you know nothing about economics and public policy."
These people communicate in a manner that is extremely alien in Singapore and I'm extremely interested to meet one in real life. Nerdy yet weirdly charismatic, extremely out of touch with the real-world. *shrugs*
The same could be said for opposition supporters who DO oppose for cool factor and lack knowledge about politics, but that's a different issue.
Overall, the important thing is we're a little freer, and that's excellent.
GOOD WORK SINGAPORE, IM SO PROUD AND REALLY, REALLY PROUD TO BE SINGAPOREAN.
p.s. I really like this new colour scheme.
