The first amendment. No doubt the greatest amendment made has made in all of mankind.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Let us compare it to this.
Sherman: What will you do to win the votes of the Americans who are atheists?
Bush: I guess I'm pretty weak in the atheist community. Faith in God is important to me.
Sherman: Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists?
Bush: No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.
Sherman (somewhat taken aback): Do you support as a sound constitutional principle the separation of state and church?
Bush: Yes, I support the separation of church and state. I'm just not very high on atheists.
(By H.W Bush)
"This is one nation under god". Unfortunately, this is a common misconception in many Americans.
In fact, I am about to show you why the politicians in America who aim to become President will most likely NOT be the most capable man for the job.
This is adapted from a lecture done by Prof. Richard Dawkins, but I assume you wouldn't want to hear a 2 hour lecture on evolution and Agnosticism.
Lets look at the correlation of IQ and Religion in America

(If you think this graph is a direct assault on religious people then I truly feel sorry for you, this graph does not conclude that religious people can never be smarter or as equally smart as non-religious people but instead shows how non-religious people are usually less likely to have low IQ, attributing to the level of rationality and Scientific knowledge required for people to become atheists however if you would obviously notice the more fundamentally religious these Americans get the lower their IQ dips....and please....NEVER compare yourselves with fundies fundies believe the world is 5000 years old and fossils were put here by god to test our faith..ouch)
However some things need no statistics...

Conclusion, (quote from Richard Dawkins), High office in the greatest Country in the world is barred from the very people best suited to hold it, unless they are ready to lie about their faith (which many do..exaggeration could be a better word). To put it bluntly, American politics are against those who are intelligent and honest.
If you think the comment by H.W. Bush is a spur of the moment thing which he would later retract, you're wrong, he stuck to it even after many requests for clarification, showing how much he didn't care about any other vote besides the christian vote.
And although 80%ish of people in America identify themselves with a religion, only 70% of them are Christian and of course 20%ish of the population being agnostic/atheist is a big number. Here's what Barack Obama has to say about it.
"Given the increasing diversity of America's population, the dangers of sectarianism have never been greater. Whatever we once were, we are no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers."- Obama
Looks like he's the only person reaching out to non-christians. I really don't know if thats a good move or a bad move...but its constitutional...so it good in my eyes.
